A $60,000 Porsche was discovered crashed and abandoned at the turn on Nonantum Avenue along the island's south shore early Sunday morning.

The driver and any occupants had already fled the scene of the accident by the time Nantucket Fire Department personnel, along with a heavy rescue team from Nantucket Memorial Airport, responded to the area around 7:30 a.m.

The Porsche Macan had apparently struck one of the massive boulders at the turn in the road, pushing it back into the brush about 10 yards, and collided with a bicycle rack. There were alcoholic beverages strewn on the ground, but it was not clear if they came from the vehicle. The Porsche was towed away from the scene on a flat bed truck from Don Allen Auto.

UPDATE: On Tuesday, the Nantucket Police Department identified the operator as John Michael Keim, 19, of 48 Main Street, Siasconset. He is being charged with speeding, leaving the scene of property damage, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
