The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) announced on Monday that it will recognize Jan Purdy Metcalf as its 2026 Artist Honoree during its annual fundraising gala in July.

"Jan’s artistic contributions, commitment to creative expression, and long-standing support of the Nantucket arts community make her a truly deserving recipient of this honor," AAN stated in its announcement. "As a long-standing artist member and member of the AAN Board, Jan has been integral in this new chapter for the Artists Association."

Metcalf, who first came to Nantucket as a teenager after missing her scheduled flight and arriving on the island on a mail freight plane, has divided her time between Nantucket and the Abacos in the Bahamas.

"All of my life, art has been playing in the background and most of the fuel for my personal progress has been my proximity to the water," Metcalf says in her AAN bio page. "Along with my painting practice, my creative life has involved interior design, owning a store and painting large murals. Having taught sailing, I enjoy having the freedom to explore painting sailboats where wind and water appear to collide as that is sometimes the reality of the chaos of a race. I feel that the familiar forms I’m discovering are becoming refined over time."

AAN also announced that Minou and Jeff Newton will serve as the 2026 Chairs of its 2026 Gala, which is scheduled for Saturday, July 18th, at the Great Harbor Yacht Club.

“We’re honored to have Minou and Jeff lead our 2026 Gala," said AAN executive director Tracey Sears. "Their generosity, creativity, and enduring support of the arts make them the perfect team to guide this important event. We’re equally thrilled to recognize Jan Purdy Metcalf as our Artist Honoree. Her artistic vision and deep commitment to the Nantucket arts community have left a lasting impact. This year’s Gala will be a true celebration of talent, collaboration, and the vibrant spirit of our island.”

“With Minou and Jeff at the helm, and Jan as our esteemed honoree, the 2026 Gala promises to be a celebration of artistry, vision, and community spirit,” added AAN artistic director Bobby Frazier.
