Barrett's Tours Celebrates 80 Years On Nantucket With New Scholarship

As Barrett’s Tours marks 80 years of operating on Nantucket, the island business is celebrating the milestone by investing in the next generation through the creation of the Barrett’s Tours Legacy Scholarship.

The local business was originally founded in 1946 by Chester Barrett and has spent eight decades providing transportation services to residents and visitors alike. Now, the company is celebrating the legacy with an annual scholarship program designed to support Nantucket students pursuing both traditional higher education and careers in the skilled trades.

The scholarship will begin in 2027 and will award two scholarships annually. One $1,050 scholarship will support a student attending a college or university, and the second will be awarded to a student pursuing trade school, an apprenticeship, a technical certification program, or other workforce training.

Applications will be due April 17, 2027, with recipients being announced on May 17, 2027. The scholarship is open to Nantucket High School seniors as well as alumni and Nantucket residents pursuing post-secondary education or workforce training.

Unlike many scholarships that place heavy emphasis on academic performance, the Barrett’s Tours Legacy Scholarship focuses on qualities such as integrity, resilience, ambition, and service to others. Applicants are encouraged to showcase their work ethic through employment, volunteer service, family responsibilities, or extracurricular involvement.

As part of the application, students are asked to reflect on a challenge they have overcome or a responsibility embraced, explaining how that experience shaped their character and how they hope to use their education or training to make a positive impact on their community.

The scholarship will also welcome tax-deductible contributions from individuals and businesses interested in helping grow the fund and expand opportunities for Nantucket students in the years ahead.
