BMW Driver Jumps Curb And Strikes Building On Main Street

The driver of a BMW X6 jumped the curb on the north side of Main Street Wednesday evening and collided with Townpool’s storefront after accidentally hitting the gas and brakes at the same time.

There were no injuries reported, and the incident is remains under investigation according to first responders at the scene. The car struck an oil pipe on the outside of the building, prompting Island Energy Services' Nat Lowell to respond to Main Street as well.

The driver, a 77-year-old from Illinois, will be cited for negligent operation of a motor vehicle, Nantucket Police Chief Jody Kasper said Thursday morning.

“On May 21, 2025, at approximately 6:07 pm, members of the Nantucket Police and Fire Departments responded to the area of 57 Main Street for a report of a vehicle that struck a building," Kasper told the Current. "Officers on scene identified the lone occupant of the vehicle as a 77-year old female from Illinois. There was no reported injury. The operator was issued a citation for Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle. The operator reported that she accidentally pressed both the accelerator and the brake at the same time."
