A boxcutter was confiscated from a student at the Nantucket Intermediate School Tuesday morning, and the matter is under investigation by the school administration, according to an email sent out to parents by principal Becky Janda.
The incident occurred when the student was "transitioning to arrival" Tuesday morning and the retractable boxcutter was spotted by another student, who reported it to their teacher.
"Our School Resource (police) Officer was contacted immediately," Janda stated in the email. "Based on the account from the student reporting we were able to identify the student and confiscate the retractable boxcutter. This is an ongoing investigation and we cannot share details, but we wanted NIS parents to know that your students are safe, actions and consequences were swiftly taken and that parents of those involved have been contacted."
Janda added that school counselors will be available to any students who feels they need support.
"Incidents like today have a broad impact on our school community," Janda added in the message. "NIS staff and students handled themselves in a very serious and professional manner and we thank you for that. We appreciate that a student 'said something' when they 'saw something,' as this is what we highly encourage all students, staff, and families to do when an unsafe situation may arise."
