A car fire erupted on Teasdale Circle near Nantucket Memorial Airport Monday afternoon, destroying a pickup truck, damaging several other nearby vehicles, and sending a plume of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles around the island. There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
The Nantucket Fire Department responded to the side street off Nobadeer Farm Road just before 2 p.m. and quickly extinguished the fire that had consumed the Ford-150 truck.
Several bystanders shared videos of the fire with the Current which you can watch below:
Fire chief Michael Cranson shared the following information about Monday's incident:
"We received a report of a car fire at 6 Teasdale this afternoon," Cranson stated in an email to the Current. "When we arrived, we found a 2017 Ford F-150 fully engulfed in flames. There was a box truck in close proximity to the vehicle on fire, and the owner of the box truck quickly moved it out of the way, but not before the side of the box truck was melted off. The box truck did not sustain any further damage, but the F-150 was completely destroyed by the fire. There was also a forklift nearby that sustained heat damage."
"We were lucky that the wind was blowing the flames and heat away from the building at 6 Teasdale during the fire so there was no extension to the building," Cranson added. "The firefighters did a great job and knocked the flames down within 10 - 15 minutes. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation."
It was the second car fire on Nantucket in less than a week, and followed one last Thursday on Bear Street in which a Volkswagen GTI went up in flames.
