The Nantucket Fire Department extinguished a car fire at a home on Madaket Road Thursday morning.

The fire briefly extended to the front of the vacant home at 308 Madaket Road and some brush in the backyard before firefighters brought it under control.

There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The vehicle, a Jeep Gladiator, was reported in flames by a passerby around 7:30 a.m.

Nantucket Fire Department Chief Michael Cranson shared this overview of the incident:

"Nantucket Public Safety Dispatch received a call at 0728 hours for a possible structure fire in the area of 308 Madaket Road. Dispatch received multiple calls stating that it may also be a vehicle fire. Upon the fire department’s arrival, we determined that there was a Jeep fully engulfed in fire approximately 10 feet away from the front of the residence (which was a single-family home).

"Fire had also extended to the shingles on the front side of the house and up into the soffit. Crews quickly put water on the fire, and also on the house, ultimately extinguishing both fires. There was a spot fire on the side of the house, most likely from burning debris being blown to that side of the property. Firefighters entered the residence through a window, confirmed that no one was home and began to check for fire extension within the home. There was no extension inside the home but there was a significant amount of smoke. There was moderate damage to the exterior of the structure, and the vehicle was a total loss.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time by the Nantucket Fire Prevention office. No one was hurt, initial fire crews rapid response, and quick deployment of water on the fire, prevented more significant damage from occurring to the home. Nantucket Public Safety Dispatch, as always, was instrumental in the positive outcome of this incident. The Nantucket Police Department was extremely helpful with traffic and gathering pertinent information on scene for the fire department personnel."
