The US Coast Guard rescued an injured fisherman off Nantucket Thursday morning from the F/V Rachel Leah.
The medevac operation was initiated after Sector Southeast New England watchstanders received notification from the Rachel Leah that a crewman had sustained facial injuries. The vessel was approximately 150 nautical miles off Nantucket at the time of the incident.
The Rachel Leah reported that the 50-year-old crew member was suffering from a large laceration on his face after a tight line was released and struck him.
A USCG MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod was launched along with a HC-144 Ocean Sentry due to the distance offshore.
After the fisherman was hoisted into the helicopter by the USCG Jayhawk team, he was transported to the Massachusetts General Hospital Trauma Center in stable condition.
