A historic house on Union Street was damaged early Saturday morning when a driver crashed a vehicle into the front of the home near the duck pond at Consue Springs and then fled the scene of the accident.
The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. and left the front facade of the home, which dates back to 1875, heavily damaged. The driver fled the scene, and the wrecked vehicle was located by police a short time later, first responder sources told the Current.
“It was terrifying,” said Ashley Lavallee, who was renting the home and was inside the structure with her brother Anthony and her three-year-old daughter when the incident happened. “So loud and the whole thing moved. No screeching, no tire skids. Just a loud bang and crash, and the house shook and moved. We woke up and immediately ran downstairs after a headcount that everyone was ok. And the car was gone while I stood there and dialed 911. I’ll never stay that close to the road. Been here every summer for 40 years and was so excited to stay at the duck house and visit them every morning with my daughter. Looks like we’ll be sticking to Sconset or something off the road next year.”
Nantucket Police have not responded to the Current's request for comment about the incident, but Lavallee said officers told her a woman turned herself in at the public safety facility hours later on Saturday.
"I was told that the female driver came in (Saturday) morning with all the passengers and turned themselves in so they will get all of the charges pressed," she said. "The police found the car not far from the scene completely totaled. No one in the car was injured."
