Driver Snaps Utility Pole In Late Night Crash On Surfside Road

A man was hospitalized late Saturday night after he crashed a truck into a utility pole on Surfside Road, snapping the pole into pieces and bringing down power lines along the road.

The driver was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and sources told the Current the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. He was the sole occupant of the Chevrolet Silverado truck, which was totaled.

The impact of the crash could be heard for several hundred yards away from the accident scene, which was located on Surfside Road in between the intersections of Miacomet and South Shore roads. The Nantucket Police Department and Nantucket Fire Department responded to the scene, and they called a National Grid crew to deal with the downed power lines and utility pole. The road was shut down in both directions for several hours in the area where the crash occurred.

The driver was identified by Nantucket police as Ryan M. Allen, 26, of Miacomet Road. He was charged with driving to endanger, speeding, and a marked lanes violation.
