A CAT excavator toppled over while being towed on a trailer by a Holdgate Partners dump truck on Bartlett Road Tuesday afternoon. There were no injuries reported, but the excavator took down a utility pole and lines near the intersection with Cato Lane, knocking out power to more than 300 properties in the immediate area.

The incident prompted a large response from the Nantucket Police and Fire Departments, along with Massachusetts State Police, National Grid, Verizon, and the Wannacomet Water Company.

National Grid’s crews were replacing utility poles around 3:30 p.m., and power was restored around 8 p.m.

There was no immediate determination by the responding authorities as to what caused the accident, but island resident Joseph Bedell, who witnessed the accident, told the Current "I don't think the boom was stored properly." The excavator clipped the power lines "all the way down the road. The first one I saw him hit was when he turned onto Bartlett (Road)."
