FedEx Closing Airport Road Shipping Center, But Vows To Maintain Island Operations
Jason Graziadei •
FedEx has announced that it will permanently close its shipping center on Airport Road by March 1, but the company has vowed to maintain its operations on Nantucket.
The move by the shipping giant headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., is part of the company's so-called "Network 2.0" initiative to combine its ground and express operations into one company. Similar consolidations are happening on Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod. Dick Fiscus, the manager of FedEx's Airport Road office, is retiring.
How can island residents utilize FedEx after March 1st?
"Poet's Corner for all over-the-counter FedEx shipping and 'hold at location' and our sort facility at 9 Nancy Ann Lane for 'hold at location'," FedEx Nantucket operations manager Matthew Peel told the Current, referring to Poets Corner Press at 16 Amelia Drive, which is a FedEx authorized shipping center. "All of our pick-ups and delivery operations remain the same. Same with employees - all employees remain with the company and no one lost their job with this transition."
In a social media post, Poets Corner Press owner Nate Roberts said he was ready for the increased traffic.
"Poets Corner Press and Sally's Shipping Counter has been an authorized FedEx Ship Center since 2017," Roberts stated. "We are located at 16 Amelia Drive and are open year-round, Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 m. and we do not close for lunch. Our operations remain the same - we will just be getting busier with the airport location closing in a few weeks. We are here for all your FedEx shipping needs. We are sad to see our friend Dick retire, but we are also very excited for this next chapter in our own story. You can all thank my mother, Sally Roberts, for us opening this FedEx partnership back in 2017."
The Airport Road FedEx location that is closing is owned by Nantucket Memorial Airport.
Peel added that while Poets Corner Press does not yet service FedEx business accounts, he expects it will be adding that service in the near future.
