Fire Department Battles Dump Fire In C&D Building

The Nantucket Fire Department responded to the Madaket landfill late Wednesday morning after receiving the report of a fire in the C&D (construction and demolition) Building. Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke and a fire located within the trash piles inside the building. Fire chief Michael Cranson told the Current that as of now, they are unsure of how the fire started, but are continuing to investigate the matter.
"Initially, we received multiple alarms from the facility," Cranson said. "The sprinkler system inside the building had activated and kept the fire from spreading to other piles of trash. We deployed two 2.5” hose lines and knocked down the majority of the fire. Next, we had an excavator make entry into the building to pull the trash piles apart so we could extinguish any remaining fire. Ultimately, the fire was extinguished in about one and a half hours."

Below are some photos from the scene of the firefighters battling the fire and knocking it down before it could spread into something worse.
