Fire Department Battles Large Brushfire Along Milestone Road

The Nantucket Fire Department rushed to the area of 280 Milestone Road Sunday afternoon after receiving a report of a large brush fire in the area near the Siasconset Golf Course.
The call was made by high school students who were stuck on the side of the road after their car broke down. They said when they pulled over and waited for the tow truck to arrive, they noticed the fire and that it was growing quickly in size.
NFD dispatched several engines to the scene. A pair of tankers drove back and forth to the area carrying water.
The brushfire was knocked down quickly and firefighters were able to protect several structures in the vicinity of the fire. Additional equipment and vehicles were utilized as a precaution as personnel remained on the scene well after the fire had been knocked down hitting hot spots.
The cause of the fire at this time is unknown, but it was the second large brush fire off Milestone Road in less than a week. Last Tuesday, April 30th, firefighters extinguished a brush fire in the area east of the Wannacomet Water Company property, between Milestone and Old South roads.
