Even as lawmakers in Washington D.C. close in on a deal to end the federal government shutdown that has dragged on for more than a month, the FAA-mandated reductions in air traffic at 40 major airports have resulted in the first cancellation of flights to and from Nantucket Memorial Airport.

Cape Air has cancelled 10 flights between Nantucket and Boston Logan as a result of the federally-mandated reductions, according to Nantucket Memorial Airport manager Warren Smith. Those flights had been scheduled to operate between Wednesday, Nov. 13 and Sunday, Nov 16.

"I don't anticipate any further reductions now that there has been a compromise reached in reopening the government," Smith said, emphasizing that the shutdown has not affected air traffic control or Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operations at Nantucket Memorial Airport.

"They continue to operate without delay or issue," Smith said.

Earlier this month, the FAA and the U.S. Department of Transportation began requiring a 10 percent reduction in flights at 40 major airports, including Boston Logan, due to the staffing impacts resulting from the ongoing government shutdown. Cape Air is the only airline currently providing commercial between Nantucket and Boston.
