Galibois Wins Democratic Primary For Cape & Islands District Attorney Over Giardino

Incumbent Cape and Islands District Attorney Rob Galibois won a comfortable victory over challenger Mike Giardino in the Democratic Primary on Tuesday, all but guaranteeing his reelection this November.

“I want to thank the Nantucket community for embracing my office's approach to achieve public safety in a comprehensive manner,” Galibois told the Current. “We believe strongly in addressing the root causes of crime such as substance use disorder and mental health issues, and we deeply appreciate our strong working relationship with Chief Jody Kasper and her team at the Nantucket Police Department.”

Galibois became the first Democrat to hold the office in over 50 years when he was elected in 2022, and voters backed his bid for a second term last night. Galibois, a long-time attorney, touted his accomplishments during his first term, including hiring more women and the first woman assistant district attorney, and has said one of his top priorities is tackling elder fraud.

Giardino had criticized Galibois for the high turnover among his staff during his first term. Galibois said that this turnover was largely the result of implementing standard review procedures and breaking up the complacency installed by his predecessors.

Nantucket followed the district, voting for Galibois by a wide margin. Galibois won 743 votes on Nantucket to Giardino’s 345.

“We're feeling pretty good,” Galibois said. “I think [the voters] see what our office is accomplishing, and they support it, and I am deeply appreciative of that support.”
