The Nantucket Harbormaster’s office, with help from local fishermen and the Nantucket Police Department, saved a golden retriever early Wednesday afternoon from the water off Codfish Park on the island's east end after dispatch called to say the dog was caught in the current and needed rescuing.
The call came in at approximately 12:50 p.m., and members of the Nantucket Police Department quickly dispatched a crew to Codfish Park to get eyes on the situation, according to harbormaster Sheila Lucey.
"The Nantucket Harbormaster’s office quickly mobilized as well, sending a crew with a kayak, rescue board, two lifeguards, and retrieval equipment to assist," the harbormaster's office said in a post on social media.
Harbormaster Sheila Lucey said in the post that her office reached out to charter boat captain and Select Board member Bob DeCosta to see if he knew of anyone fishing in the area who might be able to help.
"Bob immediately contacted Corey Gammill, who in turn contacted his fellow captain, Captain Bill Tolstead, and explained the situation," Lucey said. "Without hesitation, Captain Bill and his crew diverted from fishing and began searching for the dog. They spotted people on the beach waving them toward the area, located the dog, and were able to safely get the dog aboard and bring it back to shore.
"This is what the Nantucket maritime community is all about," Lucey continued. "When there is someone — or something — in trouble on the water, people come together, communicate, and help. The quick response, teamwork, and willingness to drop everything to help truly made the difference (Wednesday)."
Lucey thanked DeCosta, Gammill, and Tolstead for jumping into action and helping save the dog’s life, calling their actions an incredible act of kindness, compassion, and humanity.
"We are incredibly grateful to everyone involved in this rescue," Lucey concluded.
