Litter Derby Teams Gather 11.5 Tons Of Trash Over Weekend
Nantucket Current •
Thirty teams of island residents fanned out across Nantucket over the weekend for the 5th annual Nantucket Litter Derby event.
The friendly competition to gather the most trash possible over two days ended with more than 11.5 tons of trash being hauled to the dump.
The goal was not only to clean up Nantucket's roadsides, open spaces and neglected areas, but also raise awareness about the island's litter problem. Organized by island resident Leah Mojer, the Litter Derby has grown into a spring tradition that brings together island organizations, businesses, and students.
That 11.5-ton trash total included the following:
- 4.69 tons of non-recyclable, non compostable waste
- 2.78 tons of metal
- 1.6 tons of glass
- .94 tons of clean wood and pallets
- .9 tons of tin and aluminium
- .6 tons of plastic recyclables
- 46 tires
The team winners were crowned at a post-event gathering at Cisco Brewers Sunday afternoon:
- 1. Cleaniacks
- 2. Nantucket Land Bank "Rubbish Rebellion"
- 3. Island Wookies
