Most people have experienced the dread of locking their keys inside their car. The level of dread depends on the situation, of course, but it would be hard to imagine a worse predicament than the one faced by the driver of a Brinks armored truck that arrived on the noon Steamship Authority ferry on Thursday.

As the M/V Eagle arrived at Steamboat Wharf and the first cars started to roll off the transfer bridge, passengers and Steamship Authority staff quickly became aware that the Brinks truck wasn't moving. The driver had locked the keys inside the armored vehicle.

Sources at the scene told the Current the SSA dock workers were able to unload the Eagle - even the semi-trailers on board - because the Brinks truck was parked against the wall of the vessel in the pole position.

As it became clear that the driver was unable to get back into the vehicle, Nantucket Auto Body was called to the scene to see if they could figure out a way into the armored truck. The only problem? The Nantucket Auto Body wrecker was stuck in today's brutal traffic jam on Milestone Road due to the ongoing roadwork at the Polpis Road intersection.

Police were called about the situation, and a cruiser assisted the Nantucket Auto Body wrecker out of the line of traffic and down to Steamboat Wharf, Nantucket Police Department Lt. Angus MacVicar confirmed. But it was all for naught.

"They tried to open the doors and jimmy it open, but no luck," a witness told the Current. "Bullet-proof doors. Impossible to get in."

The M/V Eagle was then loaded up with cars and trucks that maneuvered around the Brinks truck - still parked against the wall inside the vessel - and the armored vehicle was sent back to the mainland without ever driving off the ferry.

"Long day for him," our source reported.
