A man was hospitalized Saturday afternoon following a rollover accident on Surfside Road involving two vehicles.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Surfside and Miacomet roads just before 3 p.m., prompting a response by the Nantucket Police and Fire Departments, along with heavy rescue apparatus.
A witness at the scene told the Current that the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder failed to stop at the stop sign on Surfside Drive, entered the intersection and struck a Toyota Tacoma that was traveling north toward Nantucket High School on Surfside Road.
The impact caused the truck to rollover onto its roof and back onto its tires. The driver of the Tacoma was conscious, but had to be removed from the vehicle by first responders, placed on a stretcher, and was transported by ambulance to Nantucket Cottage Hospital.
The occupants of the Nissan were uninjured.
The accident prompted police to close that portion of Surfside Road for more than an hour, and caused a crowd to gather as first responders attended to the victim.
The man’s condition was not immediately available, and it was unclear whether police would be filing charges as a result of the accident.
