Man Medflighted To Boston After Rollover Crash On Milestone Road

A 29-year-old man was hospitalized and later transferred to Boston my Medflight helicopter following a rollover crash Tuesday morning on Milestone Road.

First responders rushed to the scene of the accident around 6:46 a.m. and discovered a Toyota Tundra pickup truck rolled over onto its side on the bike path that runs along Milestone Road near the intersection with Chuck Hollow Road.

Witnesses told the Current that the vehicle was headed eastbound toward 'Sconset on Milestone Road, and that the driver was spotted outside the vehicle on the ground following the crash. It's unclear if he was ejected from the truck.

Shortly after the man was rushed to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, he was transported by Medflight helicopter to a Boston hospital for further treatment.

Nantucket Police Chief Jody Kasper shared the following statement about the incident later Tuesday morning:

"At approximately 6:46 a.m. today, members of the Nantucket Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover crash in the area of Milestone Road near Chuck Hollow Road," Kasper said. "Upon arrival, officers determined that the vehicle, a Toyota Tundra pickup truck, had been traveling eastbound when it left the roadway and rolled over. The sole occupant, a 29-year-old island resident, sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was initially transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital and subsequently airlifted to an off-island hospital for further treatment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No further details are available at this time."

Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Esposito stated the department responded with an ambulance, heavy rescue unit, and utility vehicle, along with a total of 11 NFD personnel. 

"NFD paramedics promptly initiated patient care on scene, and the individual was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital for further evaluation and treatment," Esposito said. "We extend our thanks to the Nantucket Police Department Dispatchers for their timely and professional communication, as well as to NPD Officers who secured the scene to ensure the safety of all responding units."
