Manning & Associates Physical Therapy will become part of Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH) starting in July, according to an announcement today released by the hospital.

Founded by Joseph Manning in 2006, the private physical therapy practice on Amelia Drive now conducts 8,000 patient visits per year. Under the deal announced Wednesday, Manning & Associates will relocate to NCH's rehabilitation facility in Bayberry Court by July 8, all of its staff members will become NCH employees, and patients will be transitioned to the hospital.

Manning, who previously worked at NCH for five years as a physical therapist before establishing his private practice, will work with the hospital in an advisory role as it expands its rehabilitation and orthopedic services.

"In considering this transition, it was critical that our patients could continue receiving the high-level, attentive, and compassionate care they expect and deserve," Manning said in a statement released with the announcement. "It is also important that my PT coworkers would be in an environment which promotes high-quality services and growth in therapist skills."

The agreement has been in the works for the past year as Manning and hospital leaders entered into discussions about integrating his practice into the hospital's rehabilitation department.

“We were obviously very familiar with the high-quality care Joe and his team provide – many of his patients are ours as well – so we saw it as an important opportunity to ensure that our island community will continue to have access to these excellent physical therapists,” Nantucket Cottage Hospital president and chief operating officer Amy Lee said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring the island has the services the community needs, and also that there will be a seamless transition as they continue their care."

In the coming weeks, Manning's patients will be provided information about the transition and necessary steps to transfer their care to the hospital.
