A Nantucket carpenter hit a $1 million prize on a scratch ticket purchased at the Cumberland Farms convenience store on Sparks Avenue.

Island resident Kevin Purcell won the huge payday playing the “$5,000,000 100X Cashword” scratch ticket game. The Massachusetts State Lottery announced last week that Purcell chose to take the one-time cash payment of $650,000 rather than a larger payout that would be distributed over time.

Purcell told lottery officials that he planned to put his winnings toward building himself a house.

The Current caught up with Purcell at the American Legion hall on Washington Street on Sunday where he was playing pool. Purcell politely declined an interview request.

The Cumberland Farms convenience store on Sparks Avenue where Purcell purchased the ticket will receive a $10,000 bonus for the sale.
