Nantucket Cottage Hospital on Friday named Dr. Barbara Malone, MD, as the hospital’s new Chief Medical Officer.
Prior to assuming the role of Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Malone had spent two years as a practicing Pediatric Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeon at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, a role she will continue combining with her new CMO position.
“When you live here on Nantucket, you feel differently about the island and our hospital, you gain a true appreciation for the community, and what we as a healthcare system can do for our island,” said Dr. Malone. “Now that we’re coming out of COVID, I really am looking forward to re-engaging the community and serving as a bridge between providers and patients.”
A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Malone brings over 40 years of clinical and leadership experience to NCH.
Malone has been a Pediatric ENT provider for 32 years, during the last seven years during which she joined the practice at Children’s Minnesota ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery. In 2016 she became the program’s medical director in charge of three major hospital sites, four clinics, seven physicians, six advanced practice providers, and the support staff for the practice. She also was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Malone has numerous peer-reviewed publications, awards, and presentations and also services as a Diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology.
“I’ve spent my career working in big healthcare systems,” said Dr. Malone. “That experience can help us optimize how our community interacts with Mass General Brigham and ensure that we’re bringing the value of this tremendous system here to Nantucket, yet retain our sense of community.”
“As the CMO, Dr. Malone will be a leader in supporting the design, development, and management of care processes along the continuum of care to coordinate all the patient's healthcare needs for better outcomes in quality and cost of care,” said Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN Interim President of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “She brings to the role the right combination of leadership and clinical experience, as well as her invaluable perspective as a Nantucket resident.”
