The Nantucket Fire Department attempted to rescue a deer that had become stuck in the ice of Nantucket Harbor Friday morning. Sadly, the deer passed away before firefighters could reach it in the frigid waters.

The rescue effort began just after 8 a.m. Friday morning when firefighters responded to the Great Harbor Yacht Club along Washington Street.

“We received a report of a deer stuck in the ice behind the Great Harbor Yacht Club,” Nantucket Fire Department Chief Michael Cranson told the Current. “We responded to the scene. The Harbormaster’s office and State Police also responded to assist. We deployed our firefighters out to the deer with our ice rescue equipment and recovered the animal which was deceased when we retrieved it. The Environment Police officer on the island was also notified.”
