Nantucket Firefighters Honored By Gov. Maura Healey At Ceremony

Members of the Nantucket Fire Department was honored Tuesday afternoon at the Massachusetts Firefighter of the Year award ceremony at Mechanics Hall in Worcester for their response to the Veranda House fire in July 2022.

A group of 29 full-time firefighters, call firefighters, and retired members of the department who responded to the massive fire at the Veranda House receiving a citation for meritorious conduct from the state and Gov. Maura Healey.

NFD Capt. Nate Barber, also received the "Medal of Valor" from Healey for his actions during the blaze, when he was off-duty but still ran into the burning building to save lives and later suffered a heart attack.
