Nantucket Multi-Cultural Media Launches Island's First Latin Music Radio Station
Nantucket Current •
Nantucket’s first Latin music radio station, El Pingüino, launched live on-air at 88.1 FM last week. El Pingüino plays Latin music including pop, salsa, merengue, and reggaeton performed by artists including Karol G, Marc Anthony, Shakira, Daddy Yankee, and more.
“We’re excited to launch El Pingüino 88.1 FM for the Nantucket community,” Laura Burnett, president of Nantucket Multi-Cultural Media, said in a press release. “With nearly half of our public school students being multilingual, Nantucket Multi-Cultural Media will provide multilingual news and information via radio, digital, and social media platforms. We’re grateful to the Community Foundation for Nantucket for their help in making this possible.”
The station was launched by Nantucket Multi-Cultural Media and will bring music, news, weather, and more to reflect the diversity of listeners and residents on Nantucket. El Pingüino becomes the third affiliate of Nantucket Radio, joining True Island Radio (97.7 ACK-FM) and Quahog Country (89.5 WNCK-FM), Nantucket’s country music station.
The future plans for El Pingüino include expanding reports and programming in Spanish, as well as offering online streaming and access through a mobile app.
El Pingüino is supported by sponsors and donors, currently through the El Pingüino Support Fund, a fiscally sponsored project of the Community Foundation for Nantucket.
“On behalf of the Community Foundation for Nantucket, we are thrilled to see this initiative come to life, expanding access for listeners across the island,” Sunny Daily, executive director of the foundation, said. “We would like to thank Laura Burnett and Jeff Shapiro for leading this project and entrusting us with their vision. Through the El Pingüino Support Fund, the Community Foundation for Nantucket is proud to accept tax-deductible donations as Nantucket Multi-Cultural Media works toward achieving their 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.”
