The Nantucket Police Department is mourning the sudden death of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Gregory Furtado, who had numerous ties to the island.

Furtado, who was just 41 years old, got his start in law enforcement on Nantucket as a summer special officer before being hired as a full-time officer in June 2005. He quickly moved on to the Massachusetts State Police, and graduated from its academy in 2006. His brother Dan Furtado is currently a sergeant with the Nantucket Police Department.

"We mourn his sudden loss and extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the entire Furtado family as well as the Massachusetts State Police," the Nantucket Police Department announced in a statement released on Sunday.

While he had moved on from Nantucket, Furtado was assigned to the State Police's detective unit for Cape Cod and Islands district and worked with the Nantucket Police Department on cases throughout his career. The cause of his death was not immediately released. Furtado leaves behind his wife and children.

Services for Sgt. Furtado are as follows:

  • Wake: Wednesday, Dec. 6th at the Cartmell-Davis Funeral Home, 373 Court Street, North Plymouth, MA, 02360
  • Funeral Mass: Thursday, Dec. 7th at Saint Peter's Church, 86 Court Street, Plymouth, MA, 02360
