Nantucket Primary Election Results

Democratic U.S. Senator Ed Markey, Democratic Representative Bill Keating, and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue have clinched their party’s nominations in the state's primary elections Tuesday, and Nantucket has reported its results for every race as well.

Incumbent Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois claimed victory in the Democratic primary against challenger Michael Giardino, with strong support from Nantucket democrats. 

In the most closely watched statewide race, incumbent Senator Ed Markey defeated challenger Seth Moulton, who represents Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional district, by a wide margin. The race was so lopsided that it was called for Markey just half an hour after polls closed. Markey’s sweeping victory is a ringing endorsement for the progressive stalwart, who had faced criticism about his advanced age—he is 80—and a perceived lack of responsiveness to his constituents. But this was not enough to sink the long-tenured Senator, who emphasized his voting record and staunch support for issues associated with the Democratic Party’s left wing.

For a few weeks in July, the election looked close. Several polls showed Moulton, a moderate, within the margin of error, and the national press began to take an interest in the contest. But during August, Markey broke the race open, topping the final three polls recorded by the New York Times by over 30 points. In the end, he won by about that margin statewide. On Nantucket, Markey won around 60 percent of the vote.

Incumbent Bill Keating easily held off challenger Craig Swallow, who ran to his left, all but guaranteeing Keating another term representing Nantucket and Massachusetts’ 9th Congressional District.

In the Republican gubernatorial primary, Mike Minogue defeated Brian Shortsleeve for a chance to take on incumbent governor Maura Healey in November.

Minogue, Markey, and Keating all won on Nantucket as well. Nantucket’s results Tuesday were as follows:

Total turnout was a modest 1,505 ballots cast, or 14.4 percent of Nantucket's 10,477 registered voters.
