Nantucket State Primary Election Results

Democratic U.S. Senator Ed Markey and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue have clinched their party’s nominations early on election night Tuesday, and Nantucket has reported its results for every race as well.

In the most closely watched race in the state, incumbent Senator Ed Markey defeated challenger Seth Moulton, who represents Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional district, by a wide margin. The race was so lopsided that it was called for Markey just half an hour after polls closed. Markey’s sweeping victory is a ringing endorsement for the progressive stalwart, who had faced criticism about his advanced age—he is 80—and a perceived lack of responsiveness to his constituents. But this was not enough to sink the long-tenured Senator, who emphasized his voting record and staunch support for issues associated with the Democratic Party’s left wing.

In the Republican gubernatorial primary, Mike Minogue defeated Brian Shortsleeve for a chance to take on incumbent governor Maura Healey in November. Both Minogue and Markey won on Nantucket as well. Nantucket’s results Tuesday were as follows:

Total turnout was 1,505, or 14.4 percent of Nantucket's 10,477 registered voters.
