Nearly Three Years After Devastating Fire, Veranda House Reopens

Nearly three years after a devastating fire burned the historic Veranda House to the ground, the hotel reopened on Thursday and welcomed the public into the rebuilt structure.
General manager Alicia Hehir cut the ribbon during a small ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Veranda House to celebrate its reopening, as attendees toured the rebuilt structure, which was designed to look essentially the same as what was there before the fire.

The Veranda House, which dates back to 1882, burned down on July 9, 2022, after an employee discarded a cigarette into the trash area below the first-floor deck. All 36 guests miraculously made it out of the inferno alive, and firefighters contained the blaze to the hotel and two neighboring homes, which also sustained significant damage.
The Veranda House is owned by the Procaccianti Companies, led by James and Elizabeth Procaccianti, of Cranston, Rhode Island. It owns and operates the Nantucket Resort Collection, which includes the Veranda House, the Chapman House, the Regatta Inn, and the Sherburne Inn.
