Photos: Litter Derby Hauls More Than 6 Tons Of Trash Around Nantucket

Participants in the 7th annual Nantucket Litter Derby last weekend gathered more than 6.4 tons of trash from around the island.
Eighteen teams fanned out across Nantucket last Saturday and Sunday for the annual event, which was established not only to clean up the island, but also to spread awareness about the litter problem.
Organized by island resident Leah Mojer, the Litter Derby has grown into a spring tradition that brings together island organizations, businesses, and students.
Some stats from this year's Derby shared by Mojer:
- 14,109 pounds of trash, including:
- 2,080 pounds of tires
- 2,080 pounds of glass bottles
- 3,040 pounds of metal
- 580 pounds of plastic containers
- 540 pounds of aluminum cans
- 240 pounds of spent tennis balls
This year's winning teams were:
First place: Cleaniack
Second Place: Land Bank Trashers
Third Place: Sconset Clean Team
