Participants in the 7th annual Nantucket Litter Derby last weekend gathered more than 6.4 tons of trash from around the island.

Eighteen teams fanned out across Nantucket last Saturday and Sunday for the annual event, which was established not only to clean up the island, but also to spread awareness about the litter problem.

Organized by island resident Leah Mojer, the Litter Derby has grown into a spring tradition that brings together island organizations, businesses, and students.
