State Police Sergeant Rescues Fawn From Abandoned Water Tank Foundation

Trooper Bates… a friend of fawns.

A baby deer was rescued Tuesday afternoon by Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Kevin Bates after it fell into an abandoned water tank foundation at the location of a house that burned down roughly 40 years ago off Crooked Lane.

Island resident Maisy Moss said she heard it crying and reported it, leading to Sgt. Bates responding to make the save.

“Great group effort involving the people that miraculously heard it crying, the Nantucket Public Safety Dispatchers, the Offshore Animal Hospital Staff, the Nantucket Wildlife, and Nantucket PD,” Bates told the Current. “The dispatchers are attempting to identify the property owner to remedy that hazard.”
