The Steamship Authority has launched a public contest to name its two new vessels - the Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs) it is purchasing from Hornbeck Offshore Services of Covington, Louisiana.

All naming entries must be received by Monday, September 5, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. via the contest website at www.nametheSSAvessel.com. Entries will be reviewed by the Authority’s senior management team before a slate of suggested vessel names will be shared with the Authority’s Port Council at its Tuesday, September 13, 2022, meeting. The Authority Board will subsequently review the suggested vessel names at its Tuesday, September 27, 2022, meeting, and vote on the names for the new vessels.

The individuals who submit the names chosen by the Board will each receive a $250 gift card valid for travel or parking to any port served by SSA, as well as an opportunity to help welcome the vessels into service. Full contest details and rules may be found at www.nametheSSAvessel.com.

The acquisition of the vessels was approved by the Steamship Authority Board on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. The sister ships, formerly used to service the oil and gas industry off the Gulf Coast, will ultimately replace the open-deck freight vessels M/V Gay Head and M/V Katama.
