Town Launches Phone Interpreter Service

Nantucket Current •

The town announced on Wednesday an expansion of its language support offerings for the island's multilingual population. The new service will provide access to telephone interpreting, video remote interpreting, and document translation services, which will enable town departments to more easily communicate with limited English-speaking residents.

An estimated 18.7 percent of Nantucket’s residents speak a language other than English at home. The town believes GLOBO Services, the new interpreter service, will help amplify the voice of Nantucket’s limited English-speaking population and expand community awareness and participation in town forums, events, and ongoing initiatives. GLOBO Services will provide 24/7 over-the-phone interpreter access and support for any language.

“The Town of Nantucket is committed to providing our residents with equal access to our services regardless of their language ability,” said town manager Libby Gibson. “We are thrilled that this new interpreter service will help us meet the needs of our diverse community.”
