Two People Hospitalized Following Violent Car Crash On Fairgrounds Road

A two-car accident on Fairgrounds Road near Parker Lane on Sunday resulted in both drivers being transported to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Their status is unknown at this time. The crash occurred just after 12:30 p.m.
Nantucket Fire and Nantucket Police personnel were dispatched to the crash and upon arrival, NFD immediately called for heavy rescue to respond to the scene. Fairgrounds Road was immediately closed off to traffic and remained partially closed beyond 2 p.m.
There was a significant amount of debris on the bike path from the Jeep colliding with a tree on the side of the road. The collision was vicious enough for the tree to be snapped in half and to be driven deep into the front of the Jeep.
There was also a plastic bag in the road with what appeared to be shards of glass scattered around it. Other materials were also laying across the road, and it is believed by public safety officials that this was a result of debris flying out of the truck's bed following the collision.
Both vehicles were towed away from the scene. The Jeep required a flatbed to take it away from the area. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but it is believed to have occurred from the truck pulling out of Parker's Lane and hitting the Jeep while it was driving down Fairgrounds Road towards Surfside Road.
The Current will continue to monitor the situation and the status of the two individuals transported.
