A Reminder Of What We Have Lost

To the editor: On January 29, the State Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) issued a five-page, detailed review of the proposed expansion of the geotubes. The expansion of the geotubes was approved by the current Nantucket Conservation Commission on a vote of 4-to-1 and is now on appeal.
The independent review is a searing critique of the proposal. It raises many of the same issues that were cited by previous Nantucket Conservation Commissions for not approving the expansion of the geotubes.
The CZM Report is a reminder of what we have lost: experienced and knowledgeable Commissioners who followed the law and the science in making their decisions. For not voting the way a small private-interest group and a majority of the Select Board wanted them to vote, they were removed from their seats — a severe blow to the Commission, to our community, and to our environment.
We thank them, once again, for their service and their stewardship: Dr. Sarah Oktay, Ashley Erisman, Maureen Phillips, Ian Golding, and Mark Beale, who resigned in protest of the non-reappointments.
Sincerely,
Mary Wawro
