Disappointed In Unitarian Church's Decision To Cancel Fourth Of July Celebration

To the editor: I’m writing to express my disappointment with the Unitarian’s Church’s decision to not host the reading of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights on July 4th. This has been one of my favorite events on the island every summer, listening to those remarkable words and singing songs we all learned in elementary school. The event is about patriotism, love of country, and is particularly special with this year’s 250th anniversary.
There are many conversations that can be had about the Trump Administration, the Supreme Court, Congress, wokeness, slavery, etc. but those are not appropriate reasons to cancel a celebration of the founding of this great country. For all its imperfections, we’re all blessed to be living in the United States and I think it’s a shame to lose sight of that. I sincerely hope that another group or facility steps up to host this year’s reading on July 4th.
