Has ACK Now Already Won?

Thomas Holland •

To the editor: Spoiler alert: ACK Now has already won the vote on Nov. 4 — and here’s how.

By offering a “compromise” (Article 2), they’ve split the vote. Voters think it’s a straight choice between Article 1 and Article 2, but choosing between the two articles only muddies the waters. More options, more debate, more division — and as we’ve seen at recent Town Meetings, this makes it highly unlikely either article will reach the required two-thirds vote.

If neither article passes, Judge Vhay's ruling takes effect: without a bylaw explicitly allowing these rentals, they won’t be legally allowed. That’s the real outcome everyone should be thinking about. Call it “Inevitable Outcome #3.”

What does that mean for Nantucket? Fewer legal rentals, serious economic pain for many who live and work here, and a narrowing in who can afford to own property on the island. Not a future most of us want.

So here’s a simple ask: supporters of Articles 1 and 2 should put aside differences and vote together on a bylaw that permits rentals — yes, essentially Article 1. Once we pass a bylaw, we can refine sensible regulations in May 2026 with a simple majority vote. No drama, just practical steps to protect jobs, homes, and the island’s character.

Don’t waste your vote. Please join forces and vote Yes on Article 1. Your future depends on it.

Respectfully submitted,

Thomas Holland
