Hospital Thrift Shop Looking Ahead to the Next Century

Jennifer Anderson •

To the editor: The Hospital Thrift Shop has served the Nantucket community for nearly 100 years. Thanks to the generosity of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, we have utilized an offsite location at Gouin Village for over a decade. The Gouin Village location provided the HTS with an additional location to receive donations, utilize three storage containers to store inventory and furniture, and hold semi-annual furniture sales on site. This location has significantly enhanced our ability to carry out our mission of providing affordable goods to our growing community and supporting the hospital financially.

For many years, HTS has secured much-needed equipment for the hospital. Most recently, HTS has donated the funds to purchase a state-of-the-art MRI scanner, an advanced mammography system, the latest imaging system providing a bone density scanner and ultrasound equipment, and last year’s record support for funding NCH employee housing.

Now, however, this strategic location will be repurposed by NCH for additional hospital services and their critical employee housing. As a result, the HTS urgently needs land or a building to replace the storage and services that had been provided by Gouin Village. And, as with so many other Nantucket non profits and institutions, we too will be needing employee housing.

We believe that sometimes the right opportunity comes through conversation. If you, someone you know, or someone in your network owns land or a building that might be a possibility, we would be grateful to hear from you and happy to explore the possibilities.

This is more than a search for a building or land for our storage containers. We are looking for a permanent addition, to continue to support the Nantucket community for years to come.

Thank you for believing in the power of community and for considering how you might be part of the Hospital Thrift Shop’s future. If you have any questions or would like to contact us, please feel free to reach out at NextCenturyHTS@gmail.com.

With gratitude,

Jennifer Anderson
