Our Island Home Is Not A Business
Frances Karttunen •
To the editor: We shouldn’t be talking about Our Island Home (OIH) as a “business.” We don’t talk about public education as a business. Or Wannacomet Water or the Sewer Dept. as businesses. Moreover, it’s pointless to keep yammering on about OIH being the only municipally owned and operated nursing facility in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts without also acknowledging that Nantucket is the Commonwealth’s most remote inhabited island.
If we don’t maintain local accommodation for those of us who are unable to be cared for at home, what exactly are we to do?
