Raphael Richter •
To the editor: As our contract with the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority concludes on February 28, 2026, we pause to reflect with immense gratitude and pride on what we have built together.
Since the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority first began service on June 1, 1995, VTS of Massachusetts has been honored to serve as the operating contractor beginning in June 1996. For nearly three decades, our organization has played a vital role in connecting residents, workers, and visitors across the island. That success was never the result of one department or one individual—it was the collective strength, commitment, and professionalism of our entire team.
To our drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, supervisors, administrative staff, and support teams—past and present—thank you. Your dedication ensured that buses ran safely and reliably, in every season and in every condition. You represented VTS with integrity, compassion, and pride, earning the respect of the Nantucket community through your daily actions.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Nantucket community, our loyal riders, Your Island Ride clients, seasonal visitors, and year-round passengers who placed their trust in us. To our vendors, partners, and stakeholders, thank you for your collaboration and support throughout the years. Each interaction—whether on the road, in the office, in the field, or behind the scenes—helped shape a legacy of dependable, community-centered service.
VTS of Massachusetts put forth a strong and determined effort to continue serving the island. Although the contract was not renewed, this outcome does not diminish the extraordinary work accomplished over the past 30 years. We remain deeply proud of the standards of safety, teamwork, and operational excellence that defined our service.
The impact of VTS on Nantucket extends beyond transportation. It lives on in the relationships built, the lives supported, and the countless moments when a reliable ride made a meaningful difference in someone’s day. That legacy belongs to every member of this team.
To our current staff, we offer our heartfelt appreciation and encouragement as you move forward. The skills, experience, and professionalism you have demonstrated here will continue to open doors and create new opportunities. Carry with you the pride of knowing you were part of something significant—an organization that served its community with dedication and heart.
While this chapter closes, the story of VTS on Nantucket will endure through the people who made it possible. The commitment, resilience, and unity shown over these decades will not be forgotten. Though our time together under this contract comes to an end, the respect and pride we share in our work will last far beyond today.
With sincere gratitude,
Raphael Richter
