Support For Deer Management On Nantucket

David Neighbours •

To the editor: As a seasonal resident of ’Sconset, I have never seen more deer on Nantucket than I did this past summer. The overpopulation has become impossible to ignore, and complaints are at an all-time high. From landscape destruction and road safety hazards to the alarming rise in tick-borne illnesses — my own family no longer lets our children play in the backyard — the impact is severe.

We urgently need to support efforts to responsibly reduce the deer herd. Funding could be directed toward building the necessary infrastructure to process deer, as well as creating incentives for hunters by compensating them for each animal culled. This would not only make the initiative more effective but also ensure it gains real momentum.

I am prepared to participate, and I know I am not alone. Please tell your readers how they can contribute financially to this important initiative (ACK Deer Management Project). With community support, we can take meaningful action on one of Nantucket’s most pressing challenges.
