Urges The Public To Attend Town Council Study Committee Forums
Joe Grause •
To the editor: With Special Town Meeting behind us, the Town Council Study Committee is asking for brief citizen participation in one of two public forums to be held on Saturday, October 5th at 10:00 a.m. or Thursday, October 10th at 5:30 p.m.
Hosted in the Community Room of the Public Safety Facility, you can attend via Zoom or in-person. The Town Council Study Committee was formed last Fall in response to Article 81 passed in Town Meeting 2023. We have been working diligently to develop a new Charter that would convert Nantucket to a Town Council form of government.
A Town Council would invest legislative power in an elected Council of nine members who represent the whole Town, not just the 8 percent who attend open town meeting. Town Councils would also meet and act throughout the year, not a single annual meeting.
At this stage, we need residents’ questions and input to help refine the proposed Town Council charter. These forums are open to any and all residents of Nantucket, voters and non-voters alike. You can read more about the Public Sessions by clicking here.
We look forward to seeing and hearing from you!
