Lionel James Starr, 83, of Nantucket, died January 9, 2026.

Born October 27, 1942 in Nantucket, the son of Lionel S. and Frances (Garnett) Starr, he graduated from Nantucket High School in 1960 where he was an accomplished student athlete. He carried that pride throughout his life as a devoted Whaler fan, attending his grandchildren’s games and beyond. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school earning, the rank ofLance Corporal and Firearms Sharpshooter.

Upon completion of his service, he worked in the masonry industry and as a commercial scalloper. He went on to become a member of the Nantucket Police Department for 10 years, where he co-founded the Nantucket Police Charitable Association. He was one of many instrumental dads who helped kick off the Nantucket Little League program, serving on the board, coaching, and managing. He then started a 20-year career with United Parcel Service and established The Starrfish charter fishing business with his son and grandsons.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter growing up on Nantucket with his uncles. He was a lifelong member of the Nantucket Boys Club. He was an active member of the Sidney & Robert Henderson Post 8608 VFW, where he sat on various committees and held numerous positions. He was also a member of Byron L. Sylvaro Post 82 American Legion in which he participated in many functions, parades and observances. Upon retirement he could be found driving cab and pumping gas at On Island Gas.

Lionel is survived by his wife of 61 years, Penny (Smoller), his son Jay (Michelle), daughter Jana Duarte (Nick), brother Richard (Ruth) Starr, his grandchildren, Kezia (fiancé Samantha), Darian Duarte, Austin & Griffin Starr, all of Nantucket, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Patricia (John) McGrady.

A visiting hour will be held on Friday, January 23, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the VFW, 22 New South Road, followed by a graveside burial at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
