Boys And Girls Swim Teams Compete In C&I League Championship

The Nantucket boys and girls swim teams traveled over to Sandwich for the Cape & Islands League Championship on Saturday. The girls had an excellent showing and tied Nauset for first place while the boys finished in fourth place, with sophomore swimmer Jake Johnson notably setting a personal record in the 50-yard freestyle.

For the girls, Hannah Gerardi set a personal best in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.01, which was over two seconds quicker than her previous best. She won the event. Gerardi qualified for states in the 200 individual medley and placed fourth with a time of 2:23.84. Gerardi also rounded out the Whaler’s 400-yard free relay, catching up to the Sandwich Blue Knight's final swimmer and overtaking them to tie the Whalers with Nauset on the championship standings.

Myah Johnson had an excellent day by setting personal best times in the 50-yard freestyle (25.34) and 100-yard freestyle (56.77), winning both events.

Sara Dussault qualified for states in the 100-yard breaststroke with a new personal best of 1:13.74, placing second. Dussault also qualified for sectionals in the 200-yard individual medley, placing fourth in the event with a time of 2:25.06.

Martina Savova set a new personal best in the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:04.83. She placed third with that time in the league championship while also qualifying for sectionals and states.

Eliza Brown qualified for sectionals in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:46.00.

As for the boys, Jake Johnson set a new personal best in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.85. He won that event as well as the 100-yard freestyle (50.78).

Justin Roethke set a season best in the 100-yard butterfly (56.88) and 100-yard backstroke (58.79), qualifying for states in both events.

The regular season is now over and the Whalers who qualified will now set their sights on the sectional and state meets. The sectional meets for both boys and girls will take place during the weekend of Saturday, February 11 and Sunday, February 12 while the state meets will take place the following weekend on Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19.
