Boys Soccer Season Comes To An End, Two Tournament Games On Wednesday
David Creed •
The Nantucket boys soccer team's season came to an end Tuesday afternoon in the Round of 32 of the Div. 4 state tournament against Frontier Regional High School 2-1.
The Whalers, ranked #19 in the tournament bracket, traveled to face the #14 seeded Red Hawks in a matchup that went into double overtime.
Nantucket fell behind in the game’s first minutes but Whaler head coach Rich Brannigan II said after the game his team battled hard and had momentum towards the end of the first half and into the second half.
As Nantucket carried the play in the second half, they were eventually rewarded for their strong play when sophomore Calvin Guevara scored the equalizer with 25 minutes remaining on an unassisted strike.
The momentum continued into the first overtime period. Brannigan said he and his team thought they may have had the game won multiple times after generating numerous high-quality scoring chances, but the Frontier goalie and defenders made several last-ditch efforts to keep the ball out of their net.
Eventually, the Red Hawks scored the game-winner and stuck a dagger into the Whaler’s hearts to conclude a successful, hard-fought season.
Nantucket finished 10-4-5 this season and graduates 13 seniors.
