The Nantucket boys lacrosse program is one of Nantucket High School’s best and most consistent. Year after year the team wins games in bunches, clinches a high seed in the state tournament, and generally makes a deep playoff run. This year is expected to be no different.

The Whalers have made the state quarterfinal each of the past two seasons, and one of the players leading the way has been attacker Cole Chambers - who is entering his senior season this spring.

Chambers leads a loaded Nantucket offense and regularly garners a bulk of the attention from the opposition, which opens up opportunities for the players around him. With this year’s team considered by some to be one of the program’s deepest groups in recent memory, that will only make it more difficult for teams to key in on Chambers.

Chambers has led the Whalers in scoring three consecutive seasons. His freshman year was just 11 games in 2021. He scored 12 goals and added 6 assists. In 2022, Chambers had 50 goals and 40 assists for 90 points as a sophomore. In 2023, Chambers had 47 goals and 31 assists for 78 points as a junior. In the Whaler’s only game so far this season against Martha’s Vineyard, Chambers had 3 goals and 1 assist.

In total, Chambers has scored 112 goals and dished out 78 assists for 190 points in 54 games.

Chamber’s players and coaches describe him as a soft spoken leader. He won’t do much jawing back and forth with the opposition like some of his teammates, but his work ethic has earned him the respect of everyone from his coaches to his teammates.

The Nantucket Current runs a series where we highlight an athlete on the island once per month – sometimes under unique circumstances, we will feature more than one.

This player doesn’t always need to be the superstar or flashy athlete. It can be someone whose greatest contributions come when no one else is looking or be someone whose impact is substantial during the game but wildly under-appreciated by the common spectator.

In this case, the player is a superstar and one of the elite players on a Whaler squad with plenty of star power. Cole Chambers has had a very successful high school career with many great moments, but hopes the best has yet to come.
