The Whaler girls lacrosse team was unable to pick up a win on Saturday in their mental health awareness game against the Sandwich Blue Knights, losing 9-7, but Nantucket did beat the Monomoy Sharks on Thursday 13-10. Nantucket currently has a 10-3 record through 13 games and sits firmly in the top 10 of the MIAA’s latest Div. 4 power rankings.

The Whalers were forced to play the final 17 minutes of their game against Sandwich one man down after a few penalties, which created a very tall task for Nantucket to overcome.

“Trying to play a man down for 17 minutes against the team on our schedule that is probably the biggest team we play all year is just a situation where you don’t stand a chance,” head coach Jami Lower said.

Sophomore midfielder Emerson Pekarcik led the Whalers with four goals in their 13-10 win and added two more goals on Saturday in the loss. Sophomore attacker Cydney Mosscrop had four goals and two assists between the two games. Sophomore midfielder Bailey Lower had six goals and four assists combined.

Jami Lower said senior midfielder Ava Mosscrop has been playing tremendous lacrosse and doing the little things that are helping her team.

“She has been on fire,” Lower said. “Saturday against Sandwich could have been a totally different score if it weren’t for her. She fights for ground balls and is just so great, awesome, and determined on the field.”

Lower said Pekarcik continues to provide her team with offense but is also showing plenty of grit every moment she is on the field.

“She played so well on Saturday and was just covered in dirt from head to toe after the game, somersaulting all over the place, she was going all out and doing whatever needed to be done,” Lower said.

Lower said another player who continues to grow and develop her game is Cydney Mosscrop, who now has 41 goals and 16 assists this season. Mosscrop has been right by the side of Lower, who now has 58 goals this season, and Jami Lower believes Mosscrop’s play is putting other team’s on notice.

“Cydney Mosscrop is amazing. She has over 40 goals and just knows where to be and when to be there,” Lower said. “She is determined and I think really making a name for herself as someone who should be face guarded and watched out for. It will be fun to watch her and Bailey grow from where they are now as sophomores over these next couple of years. Those two in the two-man game is pretty insane.”

Nantucket will host Barnstable on Tuesday at 4 p.m. as they aim to improve their record to 11-3.
