Girls Tennis Cruises To 5-0 Win Over Sturgis East

The Whaler girls tennis team was desperately trying to get the bad taste out of their mouth following a 5-0 beatdown against Martha's Vineyard on April 30. They had their first opportunity to do so on Friday against Sturgis East when the Storm came to the island. The Whaler's cruised to a 5-0 victory behind a strong, all-around team effort.
It began with senior Emily Dussault, Nantucket's top singles player, making quick work of her opponent in straight sets (6-1, 6-0).
Abbey Boylan, the Whaler's second singles player, had to scratch and claw for each point. She won her first set 6-2, but dropped the second set 4-6. Boylan was able to stay composed and play some of her best tennis in the third and final set, winning it 6-3 and clinching her game 2-1.
Freshman Elis Vieth was in the Whaler's third singles slot once again, played very well and won her matchup in straight sets despite a challenging second set (6-1, 7-5).
Joan Harris and Haley Ray won their first doubles matchup against the Storm 2-1. Sandwiched in between a first set victory of 6-1 and a third set victory of 6-2, both Ray and Harris found themselves in a tough set that they ultimately lost by a very narrow margin, 5-7.
Senior captain Sarah Hanlon and Lauren Cutone were Nantucket's second doubles pairing. Hanlon has played all over the lineup and has been a singles player as well. Cutone has shown versatility when it comes to building chemistry with teammates, having had several partners over the course of the spring. Hanlon and Cutone made quick work of their matchup, winning it in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
The Whalers have now won two out of three matches and will play their final home match of the season, weather permitting, on Monday when the Cape Cod Academy Seahawks travel to the island for a 4 p.m. matchup. Nantucket lost to the Seahawks 4-1 in their first matchup against Cape Cod Academy, on the road, on April 13.
