Sports Roundup: Boys Soccer Earns Gutsy Win On The Road

This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the boys soccer team following a gutsy road victory as well as an update on the golf team after they secured another home victory.
Guevara Leads Nantucket Past Abington On The Road

When the Whalers lost to the Monomoy Sharks 3-1 on September 12th, head coach Rich Brannigan II described it after the game simply as a contest where you toss it out of your memory and burn the tape. There wasn’t much of anything positive to take out of the performance, and both Brannigan and his players knew this and understood they needed to be better if they wanted to have a successful season.
Since that time, Nantucket has responded beautifully and shown that they were able to take a bad game, learn from it, and use that lesson to help them advance through the season. They beat their island rival – Martha’s Vineyard – on the road two days later on September 14th 1-0, beat a Cape & Island’s rival in Dennis-Yarmouth 4-0 on the road September 18th, and capped off the three-game road trip on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Abington High School.
The response from the Whalers has been a strong one, and suddenly that Monomoy loss is in the rearview mirror as Nantucket sits in the midst of a three-game win streak and with an above .500 record of 4-3.
The Abington Green Wave led 1-0 at halftime, but the Whalers didn’t panic and tied the game after star striker Stoyan Popov was taken down in the box, which led to a free kick from that spot that was capitalized on by Guevara.
With under five minutes remaining in regulation, Guevara stayed red hot by scoring the eventual game-winning goal off an assist from freshman Raakin Brannigan – giving Nantucket one of their best wins of the season.
“The positive thinking and never quit attitude of these Whalers put them in the position to earn the W,” Brannigan said. “Standouts for this game were Denzel Tejada, who anchored the defense and Aldo Lemus with Raakin Brannigan who grew more dominant in the midfield as the game leaned more and more towards (our) favor. Calvin Guevera was calm and composed when it mattered the most (Wednesday).”
Nantucket returns home with a chance to improve to 5-3 when they host the Sandwich Blue Knights on Friday, September 26th at 3:30 p.m. and then host St. Mary’s High School on Saturday, September 27th at 12 p.m.
Golf Earns Second Consecutive Win

The Whaler golf team was able to earn a 252-303 victory at the Miacomet Golf Course Wednesday afternoon over the Rising Tide Herons – improving their record to 6-3 this season. Nantucket was also supposed to play on Thursday in a road matchup against the Sturgis West Navigators, but that game was postponed.
Below are the scores from Wednesday’s victory over the Herons.
